Recent Researches

Discussions on Muarajambi region cannot be separated from general inquiry about the history of Srivijaya. There are many researches and seminars conducted on the subject, include:

M.G. Coedès in the year of 1918 published a remarkable memoir called “Le Royaume de Crivijaya”. Professor Krom published similar writings in the following year, while Ferrand did likewise three years afterwards. Meanwhile, there are other scholars who contributed significantly in various aspects of the history of Srivijaya. Among those who are prominent in this field include Vogel, W.F. Stutterheim, Mus, J.L. Moens, Roland Braddell, F.D.K. Bosch, F.M.Schnitger. From India, there are R.C.Majumdar and Nilakanta Sastri. Recent intensive studies and extensive researches are being conducted by J.G. de Casparis, Westenenk, O.W. Wolters, P.Y. Manguin and E. Edwards McKinnon.

From Indonesia, researches were initiated by Prof. Dr. Satyawati Suleiman (Centre of National Archeological Research; Pusat Penelitian Purbakala dan Peninggalan Nasional), Prof. M. Boechari, Prof. Dr. Slamet Muljana, Prof. Dr. R. Soekmono, Prof. Dr. R.P. Soejono, Prof. Dr. Edi Sedyawati (University of Indonesia), Dr. Endang Sri Hardiati (ex-Director of the National Museum, Jakarta), Prof. Harry Truman Simanjuntak (LIPI), Prof. Dr. Mundardjito (University of Indonesia), Wanny Rahardjo Wahyudi (University of Indonesia), R. Wisnu Wijaya, B.S. Dermawan, M. Nazir, Junus Satrio Atmodjo, Prof. Dr. Timbul Haryono (University of Gajah Mada), Dr. Daud Aris Tanudirdjo (University of Gajah Mada), Nurhadi Rangkuti and so on. Other researches were also conducted by Dominik Bonatz, J.D. Neidel, Mai Lin Tjoa-Bonatz, Dr. P.J. Ter Keurs, Veronique Degroot, Leonard Y. Andaya and others.

One of the latest seminars held was International Seminar on Srivijaya Civilization, the Awakening of a Maritime Kingdom. The seminar was held in Palembang on July 15-18, 2008 by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Indonesia dan Regional Government of South Sumatra, in order to celebrating 100 years national awakening, Visit Musi 2008 and Visit Indonesia Year 2008, with many domestic and international speakers.
